The Drinkler App for Android

Well the application for Android is very close to complete. We have over 1400 cocktails in the database and we are currently putting some place-holder data in for beer and wine.

I’ve been using the application every day to track my own drink favorites, write reviews, etc. As a result I have learned a ton about cocktails, how to prepare them, why you double-shake egg drinks, what the heck Galliano is (tasty, but expensive). I have also been using the Drink Design Lab to try out new drink ideas. The Hairy Sangrita is one that I designed. I didn’t see any drinks that used cilantro. Combining tomato juice, lime juice, orange juice, salt, tequila and muddled cilantro just seemed to make sense to me and the drink turned out to be delicious. Its a variant on the Bloody Mary, but I think you’ll enjoy its character.

Since the web site isn’t yet geared for use (its designed to be used by the Drinkler android application) I’ll post the recipe here:

Hairy Sangrita

  • 2 pinches of salt,
  • 3 sprigs of cilantro
  • 1 ounce of lime juice
  • 1 ounce of orange juice
  • 1.5 ounces of tequila (only use 100% agave if you know what’s good for ya!)
  • 1.5 ounces of bloody mary mix

Directions

Muddle the salt and 2 of the cilantro in a mixing glass. Then add the rest of the ingredients and shake with ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with the remaining sprig of cilantro.

As I had hoped, the application has really opened up the world of cocktails to me. Now I don’t aspire to being a professional bartender, but being a competent at-home bartender can really help when you are entertaining.

Shake-Shakeup Revisited

The items I ordered from Amazon (see previous blog post) turned out to work perfectly. I was able to make my own boston shaker for less than $10.00 USD. Hard to believe that you can buy boston shakers for more than $100.00. I doubt they shake drinks any better!
